In this world, employment is survival. Your boss assigns tasks; completing them keeps your survival ticket — "the only thing between you and a demon's maw" — valid. The diligent are rewarded; the disobedient face consequences. That exchange is the economy of the game: you pay in labor and obedience, and the currency you earn back is another day of existing.

The Rules of the New Society
The official description is unusually clear about the stakes: humanity lost the war, the remaining people are eaten, sacrificed or enslaved, and the survivors work. Talking with demons and other survivors is how you "learn the rules that govern this new society" — which makes conversation itself part of the economy. Information is a wage.
